I listened to an audio tape recently and the speaker posed the question, what’s your true purpose? [Silence]… I didn’t know.

I remember reading the bookThe Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren when I was a teenager but I didn’t finish reading the book.

Truth is, if you ask 70% of the world’s population, I am sure they will tell you they don’t know their true purpose. It doesn’t matter whether they are rich or poor, short or tall, old or young. A lot of people don’t know why they are on this earth and what their calling is.

I recently realised, that I too didn’t have the answer. It made sense because I have lived quite a creatively scattered life. I am a jack of all trades and master of none.

I am creative yet I lack focus; I sing, I write poetry, I make skincare products, I run a marketing blog, I run a skincare blog. But the reality is… it’s impossible to master anything if you don’t focus on one thing except you’re a genius, which I am not!

What’s mastery?

The Oxford Dictionary defines mastery as a “comprehensive knowledge or skill in a particular subject or activity”.

The only way you’re ever going to get to the top is if you choose one thing and master it. Eventually you will be successful because you’re the best at it.

Passion or Purpose?

When it comes to entrepreneurship, we often think we need to start a business that we are passionate about. I disagree because you can have 20 passions but you can only have one true purpose.

I am passionate about eating but I would hate to be a chef. In fact, I would probably end up burning down the kitchen down. I am passionate about singing but I don’t like the idea of touring the world, living out of a luggage and sleeping in hotels. It is important for you to know the difference between your passion (hobby) and your true purpose.

Recently, I discovered my true purpose and everything makes sense. I decided that any projects I do from now on must fit within my true purpose. My true purpose and is to inspire and empower women. This is what I live for, this is what makes waking up bearable, this is what makes life worth living, this is what steers me on when life gets difficult, this is the very reason I was placed on this earth.

Why is it important to know your true purpose?

It is important to discover your true purpose as it will help to direct your life. When I didn’t know my true purpose, I felt lost, confused even though I had achieved a lot of success in my career yet I felt disillusioned. And I felt that there was more to life.

Knowing your purpose helps to reduce stress

A research conducted by Patrick Hill, an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Carleton University in Canada concluded that people with a sense of purpose had a 15% lower risk of death, compared with those who said they were aimless. And it didn’t seem to matter when people found their direction. It could be in their 20s, 50s or 70s. Other studies show that knowing your purpose helps to reduce stress, increase your mental wellbeing and physical health.

So I would love to close this post with this question. Do you know your true purpose? If you don’t would you like to discover it? Drop a comment below!
